Suddenly, I noticed that I was missing tons of calls. I just assumed it was due to poor reception at work, but the other day I had my phone in my hand while receiving a call, and noticed it wasn’t vibrating any more. I tried resetting the phone, removing apps, restoring. Eventually I just gave it a good hard old fashioned whack and the phone started vibrating when I called it again. In looking at the apple support fourm, I guess some other people are having the same issue. I’ll probably take it in to the Apple Store to see what they say, but this is not a good sign for an 8 month old $400 phone.
UPDATE: Now that I think about it I don’t believe it is vibrating as strong as it used to.
UPDATE2: I made a post to the Apple support forums saying that I fixed the issue by giving the phone a whack, but they deleted the post claiming it was bad advice. I can see their point.
I had the same problem with my phone. Tried everything to fix it but nothing work. Saw the forums mentioning tapping it with a hammer etc. Thought it was strange but gave it a try with the handle of a pair of scissors. I tapped it fairly gently on the top left hand corner of the phone. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the advice.
heh, it worked for me too.. thanks
Wow, Ive tried everything and thats the only thing that worked. Make sure you hit the top left corner where the phone is FACING you. Right where the earphones plug in. . .
Holy shit it actually works. Now how about the no ringing problem lol. It’s gives me the “this accessory is not…..” message and just shuts off the ring tone speakers at the bottom.
Yep, worked for me too! This solution is a little gem. I had been missing calls for weeks since my vibrate stopped working.
Jeez! It worked for me, too! Go figure… whack it a good one, show it who’se boss.
cant believe this actually worked for me too. just banked in under the endge of my desk quiet hard and wroks a treat. thanks
After googling the issue i came accross this suggestions, I have tried it and it actually works, I was a bit skeptical about tapping the phone, I had to try it, the suggestions saved me the tripp to the apple repair store.
Thanks.
I dropped my iphone a few months ago and it hit on the top left corner, putting a little dimple in the metal case, and of course it stopped vibrating. Gave the thing several whacks like the others here but no joy. Finally tried twisting and torquing the case and it slowly started vibrating again as long as it was twisted a certain way. Took a pair of pliers to the corner of the phone (wrapped in cloth)and pinched the corner slightly and now it vibrates as strong as ever! Thanks people!!!
How good is that, worked for me, just hit it on the desk……. & vibrate works again
It works…have not laughed so hard in a while. Bravo!
It doesn’t work on mine
do i have to turn the phone off or put it in silent mode or what? And does this trick work on the 3gs too?
Thanks for the advice it actually works! after more than 2 weeks without vibrating
Thought you were all either nuts or dumb. Sitting here with my IT guy reading about the same problem of phone not vibrating. FInally, gave the top left of the phone a good whack onto a pile of papers on my desk. Low and behold, not it vibrates. laughing our ass off now. Thaks for the advie.
My girlfriend dropped my phone last night and it quit vibrating. I tried this amazing little trick and it worked first try! Hilarious. My girlfriend can live to see another day.
LOL WTF FUCKTHAT SHIT REALLY WORKED I COULDNT STOP LAUGHIN. BUT I HAD TO TRY IT
OMG!!! It really worked!!!
after trying your trick a few times harder and harder as i went, it actually started vibrating again. Thanks for saving me a few dollars and a trip to an apple store!
LMAOO hit the top left corner it works
I wasnt a believer until I tried it!! Took me a couple tries but it really worked!!
It actually worked. I dropped my iPhone 3G yesterday at the movies. Then the next day I missed a bunch of texts and phone calls. I tried resetting it and then i tried going to the settings and none of that didn’t work. I read this post about giving it a good whack and i whacked and gave a good shack. And it worked. Saved me a trip to the Apple store…..yayy!
Just banged it on my desk in the corner near the headphones a couple times, each time progressively harder until it started vibrating again. This is how we fix things in America!
brought my iphone back to where we bought it and they called apple, and apple told us to restore it… i would have lost most of the stuff on my phone so i decided to google why it wouldnt vibrate and found this… at first didnt think it would work but after reading all the comments i thought i might as well try. didnt even hit it that hard and it worked again! very weird… any explanation to why this happens? is the motor loose or something
Thanks this worked and I am very happy!!!!! Saved me alot of time
HAHA it seems weird to think that an old fashion AMERICAN idea like whackin it actually works….whoda thunk it?!?
Hit the corner of my phone against a window ledge – still no vibrating.
Used a hammer – vibration-tastic.
Brilliant. Many thanks for the tip – only realised after I had missed 9 calls from my fiancee!!!
It works deam good idea ehh
It took a few tries and a pair of plastic scissors… but it WORKED! Thanks!
I’ll be buggered! The rap on the upper left corner just worked for me too!
Well I tapped it on the top left corner against the floor and it started working BUT after that it stoped working
so now I don’t know what else I an do please help!!!!
It works just hitting it with your knuckle to, it’s so damn crazy!
Haha! I was reading this thinking… man, what a bunch of weirdos… but sure enough, a quick look around to make sure no one was looking and a good smack to the corner, off it went ha!… although it only vibrates twice or so then stops, requiring me to hit it again to make it work. But never the less… works perfectly. Whoever found taht out… genious. Shame smashing my computer with a sledgehammer dosent work the same
well mine just stopped vibrating and i read this tapped it with siccors still wont work. im so mad
NEVERMIND I FIXEDDD IT YAYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You may have to do it a few times, but totally works! I thought this was all a bunch of hooey, but it does the job. GREAT FIND!
WHacked it real hard with my knuckle, palm, the corner of the desk you name it.. still doesn’t vibrate =(
Doesn’t surprise me though because My iPhone has stopped vibrating 3 months ago..
wooww… this is crazy lol i banged it on my desk like 7 times and each time the vibration got stronger…lol im laughing so hard right now
I was getting rather worried about my phone not vibrating anymore since i just got it all and jailbroke not long after…. i thought my problem came from a jailbrake app but i gave it a few nice taps and it worked. Nothing beats the old fashion remedies like blunt force =D
This totally works, OMFG iWas totally skeptical at first but iHad no other options and no money to go the store with it, so in desperation iSlammed it on the edge of a desk…and NOW IT FREAKING WORX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoever made this up is a freaking genuis
Thanx Whoever Made It Up-And Other Forum Members for trying it first for verification
xD
Well, I’ll be. Add one more vote for beatin the hell out of your iphone.it now vibrates. thanks, saved me $199.00
Okay, I’m a believer too! I REQUIRE the vibrate function to wake me up in the morning…I’ve been oversleeping ever since it stopped working, but after whacking the hell out of it about 10 times it finally started working again. You people ROCK!!
I didn’t think this would work either. It took me 20 minutes to get this to work but it did eventually. Hopefully it stays this way. First I tried hitting it up into the bottom of my desk with no success. Next I tried hitting it with the handle of a screw driver also with no success. Someone here said they tried a hammer. I didn’t feel very comfortable hitting it with the hammer but I tried it anyway with no success. Eventually I got angry and hit it three times really hard on my desk on the top left corner and said “I… Hate… You!” After this, it works like a champ. Lesson 1 – Beat your phone. It’s good for it.
I googled ‘iphone won’t vibrate’ and this is the post that came up. 5 seconds later I fixed the problem. Started out tapping it with scissors and then gradually harder, ended up tapping it on the desk as directed and…like a charm–I’m vibrating again!!! Looks like 40 people have had the same experience. Pretty good ods!
HELP MEEE.

Wow, I can’t believe it worked, tapped the top left corner with the handle of a screwdriver and flicked to silent mode and it starts to vibrate now.
Wooohoo! My phone has not been vibrating for quite some time and banging it on my desk worked! I think Apply owes the OP an apology and should make him an honorary Genius. Haha!
thanks my phone wasn’t vibrating for a while. this worked like a charm!!
i’ve never had more fun fixing something ever. smiles
WOW. i was getting worried and then a little tap with a highlighter and boom. working
Unbelievable, i was very skeptical about trying this on a $400 phone….after 3 weeks of missing calls i used a screwdriver handle and to my amaze IT WORKS!!!!!!! very pleased and thankful that i was able to read all of your previous posts, truly gave me the balls to do it, simply blown away
